Investigations on Aerosol Constituents and Properties Variability: A Study Using Multisite, Multiyear Ground Data

ABSTRACT: This study examines aerosol classifications which impact the Earth�atmosphere system by estimating and analyzing aerosol species based on aerosol properties obtained from seven Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) stations in India: Kanpur (KP), Jaipur (JP), Gandhi College (GC), Pune (PN), IIT Delhi (IIT), Amity University Gurgaon (AUG), and Gual Pahari (GP) with different terrain and climatic conditions. We utilized various erosol optical and physical properties such as aerosol optical depth (AOD), �ngstrom exponent (AE), single scattering albedo (SSA), and volume size distribution (VSD) to classify the different aerosol species. Analysis of onthly and seasonal variabilities of AOD and AE revealed predominant coarse-mode aerosols during premonsoon and monsoon, shifting to finemode dominance in winter and postmon soon, with JP exhibiting persistent coarse-mode prevalence. VSD analysis supported these findings, indicating potential coagulation/condensation processes in winter and postmonsoon. Aerosol classification using AOD�AE relations and SSA�fine-mode fraction (FMF) thresholds revealed the dominance of dust and fixed-type aerosols at most sites. Biomass burning aerosols were also the significant contributors at certain locations. Spectral SSA analysis showed increased scattering during premonsoon and monsoon, indicating coarse mode dominance, and increased absorption in postmonsoon and winter,
signifying fine-mode prevalence. Aerosol absorption was assessed by correlating dSSA 5 SSA440 2 SSA1020 with AE. The curvature effects of AOD, difference polynomial coefficients (a2 2 a1), and the second erivative of AOD (a) were also studied for improved aerosol classification. Further, dAE 5 AE440�675 2 AE500�870 was employed to identify different aerosol types, supporting previous findings. The conclusions of these studies showed significant dominance of the anthropogenic fraction at all the sites, irrespective of their geographic locations.
